NACFE Soon to Release Second of 5 Reports on Run on Less – Messy Middle

From Executive Director Mike Roeth

Our second report from Run on Less – Messy Middle is days away from being released. Terrain, Technology, and Telematics: The Messy Middle Operations Report will make its debut during a press conference at The Technology & Maintenance Council’s Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibit in Nashville. More details can be found later in this newsletter.

This is the second of five reports that NACFE is producing surrounding the Run. We have completed two reports and the other three are in the works. Here’s what’s up next.

The Emission Footprint Report will look at what was learned about emissions from the data collected during Run on Less – Messy Middle.

The TCO Ramifications Report will analyze real-world data from Run on Less – Messy Middle to compare the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) across diesel, CNG, BEV, and hydrogen powertrains. The report will show that economic parity is not a fixed future date, but a specific operational window defined by duty cycle, infrastructure strategy, and other factors. The findings seek to offer fleet managers a framework for deciding which powertrain belongs on which route over time.

The Final Findings Report will revisit the initial findings from the report to see if those findings are still valid in light of the more detailed dive into the dataset by NACFE staff members and from the learnings at the data workshop. We anticipate that many of the initial findings will remain valid, but that others may have to be refined or tweaked based on insights gained from further analysis.

These reports will all be published throughout the spring and early summer as we continue to mine data from the Run and share our findings with the industry to assist fleets in making the correct powertrain decisions throughout trucking’s Messy Middle.
