NACFE Releases First of 5 Reports on Run on Less – Messy Middle

From Executive Director Mike Roeth

We just released the first of five reports on Run on Less – Messy Middle. How NACFE Helped Bring Clarity to the Messy Middle provides a blueprint of the various elements that make up the Run including how and why the NACFE team decided to focus on the long-haul sector of the trucking industry and how the 13 fleets were selected.

The report also provides insight into visits to all 13 fleet sites, the various efforts to promote the Run including fleet videos, Stories from the Run and short Hot Takes videos. It also contains information on the pre-event Bootcamp educational sessions. One section of the report covers what was measured via Geotab devices for all four powertrains as well other specific matrices that were captured for each of the powertrains.

NACFE’s communications director, Denise Rondini, describes the report as a blueprint that includes all the steps involved in taking Run on Less – Messy Middle from an idea to a three-week fuel efficiency event.

This report provides transparency into everything surrounding the Run. We believe transparency about the Run is critical because it fosters confidence among people in the trucking industry about what we are learning from the data collected during the Run. Showing the behind-the-scenes effort should give the industry confidence in our findings and our data.

Next week we are hosting a data workshop in which we will take a deeper dive into the data. At TMC we will be releasing the second report from Run on Less – Messy Middle on operations, Terrain, Technology, and Telematics: The Messy Middle Operations Report. This report will analyze how these trucks performed in active revenue service, focusing on duty cycles, dwell time, and utilization.

An Emissions Footprint report will look at what was learned about emissions from the data collected during the Run. A report on TCO Ramifications will compare the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) across diesel, CNG, BEV, and hydrogen powertrains. The Final Findings report will revisit the initial findings from the report to see if those findings are still valid in light of the more detailed dive into the dataset by NACFE staff members and from the learnings at the data workshop.
