NACFE Begins Run on Less – Messy Middle Fleet Visits
From Executive Director Mike Roeth
Things are getting exciting here at NACFE. Since the beginning of the month, we have completed visits to five of the 13 fleets that are participating in Run on Less – Messy Middle. While the travel schedule is
brutal and the day at the fleet location is hectic, it also is energizing and invigorating to be on site with
these fleets that — regardless of powertrain — are pushing the limits of freight efficiency.
At each location we interview a host of people including fleet leaders, drivers, fleet maintenance people,
truck manufacturers, major component makers, people involved in fueling or charging the vehicles if
they are not running on diesel and other suppliers. We learn so much at these visits. Once visits are
completed, our talented videographer, James Brown, reviews all the footage from each site and
condenses it down to a short — usually less than 12-minute — video. Once the videos are complete, we
develop a web page for each fleet that not only contains the video but a profile of the fleet, information
on the specs of the truck we are tracking, descriptions of the routes and freight being hauled as well as
information about the drivers — who are a big part of the fuel efficiency equation.
We will begin releasing videos every other day beginning August 1, so you can have plenty of time to
learn about each of the fleets participating in this year’s Run before we kick off the Run on September 8.
Of course, once the Run kicks off, we will be adding a dashboard of metrics for each fuel type. The
dashboard is a little trickier this year because we have to set different measurements for the various
fuel types. Yunsu Park, our director of engineering, has been working overtime with LTL MTN, our
website pros, to make sure we present useful data to the industry.
We are getting excited for September 8 when the Run kicks off and hope you’ll regularly check out the
Run on Less website especially as we begin to populate it with profiles of the 13 fleets.
In case you’ve forgotten who’s in this year’s Run, here is the list of participants. You’ll see some familiar
