April 23, 2012 – Yesterday, the world celebrated Earth Day 2012. Earth Day began in 1970 and has as its primary purpose to hold events worldwide to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment. On Friday, Werner Enterprises celebrated Earth Day with an event for all employees at their Omaha, Nebraska headquarters.

The NACFE held its 5th driving innovation meeting on March 7th in Indianapolis in conjunction with the Green Truck Summit and NTEA Work Truck Show. The meeting was an exciting look at the here and now and future of freight efficiency. Mike Roeth led a discussion of the major findings of the NACFE 2011 Fleet Study and Mike O’Connell, Sr. Director of Fleet Operations at Frito Lay shared how Frito is using the study results to drive even more fuel efficiency improvements into their class 8 OTR fleet. “As a participating fleet, my team and I spent a few days off site pouring over this report, deciding what to quickly pursue and some areas, quite frankly for us to avoid.” Mike mentioned. Then the group stretched our thinking about some longer term opportunities for efficiency led by Steve Viscelli, NSF Postdoctoral Fellow, Center on Wisconsin Strategy. Steve offered a concept around using Urban Ports as a tool to optimize freight distribution. Steve suggested “how about we have long haul trucks, highly aerodynamic and optimized for 65 mph with trained drivers, bring the freight to brownfield sites, just outside the cities and then have daycab, maneuverable, alternative fuel trucks deliver in the cities”. Attendees had a highly energetic discussion about the possibilities for fuel savings, driver satisfaction, congestion mitigation, etc. Driving Innovation 6 will be held September 20th in Charlotte. The NACFE will continue its highly successful Driving Innovation meetings with a Roundtable on Technology Adoption on Wednesday, March 7th in Indianapolis. This meeting will be an opportunity for anyone in the industry interested in how new technologies and practices are being introduced by major NA fleets to reduce their fuel expenses. “Real Fleets. Real Experience.” is a study completed by the Council to understand adoption. This meeting will contain a dialogue on the findings of this study. The discussion will also include future efforts planned by the NACFE. Join us, its free! Click here to register. This report compares the results of a deep investigation with eight major North American fleets concerning their adoption of various products and practices for fuel efficiency. It identifies benchmark competencies of the eight companies in many different subject areas.
